KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- All five teams from the conference which have advanced to the NCAA Division II Tournament have representatives on the All-MIAA first-team, as selected by the league's coaches prior to the semifinals of the MIAA Tournament.
Three of the qualifiers had two players on the list -- including conference tournament champion Truman (34-5, 12-1 MIAA), West Division leader Washburn (34-3, 12-1 MIAA) and 25-time NCAA-II qualifier Central Missouri (30-6, 9-4 MIAA).
Both of the WU Lady Blues on the first-team returned to the top squad after a year's absence. Senior RH Tessa Jones made it back to the top list after making second team last season and first team as a sophomore in 2005. She also was the choice as the conference's Most Valuable Player.
Jones is currently third in the MIAA in points (4.98 ppg) and kills (4.32 kpg) and eighth in hitting percentage (.314).
Junior OH Monica Miesner missed most of last season with an injury after earning first-team honors in 2005. She's 10th in points (4.01 ppg) and kills (3.43 kpg) entering the South Central Regional, which starts Thursday (Nov. 15) at Truman's Pershing Arena.
The region's top seeded Bulldogs were represented by a repeat first-team choice in junior MH Allie Cherven along with junior RH Melissa Keck.
Cherven's .330 hitting percentage ranks third in the MIAA and she's second in blocks with 1.33 per game. Keck is just ahead of Cherven in hitting, ranking second at .336.
The MIAA's hitting leader at .380, senior MH Jillian Ohrman of the UCM Jennies, was joined by senior L Audrey Jensen.
Ohrman also ranks fourth in scoring (4.90 ppg) and kills (3.98 kpg) and fifth in blocks (1.27 bpg). Jensen, a converted outside hitter, was second in the MIAA with 5.97 digs per game and sixth in service aces (0.35 sapg).
Rounding out the first team is sophomore OH Pamela Cartagena of Pittsburg State (28-8, 8-5 MIAA) and sophomore OH Arica Shepard of Emporia State (26-8, 10-3 MIAA).
Cartagena is ninth in scoring (4.02 ppg), eighth in kills (3.51 kpg) and 10th in digs (4.68 dpg -- top non-libero in the league). Shepard is the MIAA's No. 2 scorer (5.02 ppg) and is second in kills (4.62 kpg.)
Emporia State S Ting Liu was the unanimous choice for Freshman of the Year. She was second in assists (13.34 apg) and third in service aces (0.41 sapg).
Washburn's Chris Herron was selected by his peers as Coach of the Year. It is the third time he's been so honored -- he won the award in 2002 and 2005.
