Governor’s Column - May 26, 2006
by Governor Matt Blunt
A Day of Remembrance
In the last few days I have had the honor of meeting our military men and
women serving on the front lines to defend freedom and liberty. I was
privileged to see the results of our soldiers’ dedication. I cannot help but
be inspired by this first hand view of the immeasurable progress they have
made and I could not help but be reminded of those who have given their
lives fighting for what we hold so dear throughout our nation’s history.
Memorial Day is the one day of the year we formally set aside to remember
those who died in service to our beloved country.
“Greater love has no one than this, that he lay down his life for his
friends,” from the Book of John comes to mind when considering the ultimate
sacrifice of those who gave their lives so that we may live in freedom. We
owe the freedom we enjoy today to the military men and women who died in
service to our country and who fought with valor to defend our freedom.
We also owe a debt of gratitude to our nation’s veterans. They are the
reason we remain the strongest nation on earth. They are the reason we stand
today with freedom unparalleled across the globe.
We must also remember the men and women currently serving in harms way. I am
honored to have had the chance to see them in action and can assure you
their dedication is boundless as they tirelessly work to expand freedom and
democracy. May God watch over them and bring each one of them safely home to
their families and loved ones. They are true patriots in their defense of
our freedom. May they remain in our hearts and prayers as they continue to
serve a grateful nation.
Let us also remember the families of our Armed Forces servicemen and women
whose unwavering support gives those serving our country the courage to
continue to stand tall in their honor. May God continue to be an enduring
presence to our military families as they support our men and women in
uniform.
I hope all Missourians will honor those who gave their lives for the freedom
and opportunities we enjoy and pray for those who defend that freedom and
opportunity today.
