Our hearts turn to wonderful and special thoughts when we celebrate Christmas. We think of family, friends, and people in need. Melanie and I know, of course, that this also is true for all Missourians regardless of faith.
"Glory to God in the highest and on earth peace, good will toward men," are words taken from Scripture that are representative of the holiday. The words are perfect for this season as we celebrate the presence of God and the beginning of a new year.
In reflecting on the year past, Melanie and I would like to encourage each of us to reflect on the tremendous generosity and strength of our state.
As your governor, I was awed by the outpouring of concern and help for victims of the Gulf Coast hurricanes, the Asian tsunami, and the daily, countless acts of kindness, charity, and concern extended to the most vulnerable Missourians.
Some time ago, I established an initiative as governor called Show-Me Solutions. Its purpose is to honor and expand the tremendous work of charitable and community organizations across Missouri. During a visit to the Children's Place in Kansas City, I saw the happiness created for a child by a grownup who took the time to read a story. On Thanksgiving, in Springfield, I helped serve a holiday meal to men and women who came to Victory Mission. Many were homeless people or shelter residents.
I know it is difficult for members of the armed forces, and especially for our men and women who are serving in Iraq and Afghanistan to be apart from their loved ones during the holidays. I spent a lonely Christmas away from family on a Navy ship so I can attest to the great sacrifice being made. Please take time to visit "America Supports You - Our Military Men and Women" at www.americasupportsyou.mil to share the holiday season with those who are standing guard for our freedom. May God's blessing shine upon each one, and bring each home safe to their families and friends.
Melanie and I are marking our first holiday season in the people's house, Missouri's Executive Mansion. It was great fun to open the doors in early December for nearly 4,000 Missourians to view the Mansion's beautiful Christmas decorations. We are particularly excited to be celebrating the first Christmas with our son, Branch.
From all of us, I extend our family's prayers and best wishes for joy and happiness, for a Merry Christmas, for a wonderful new year, and for peace and reconciliation throughout the earth.
