JEFFERSON CITY, MO, AUG. 7, 2006 -- The Missouri Department of Natural Resources will present "Late Summer Corn Madness" on Saturday, Aug. 19, at Nathan Boone Homestead State Historic Site near Ash Grove. The program will begin at 10 a.m. and run until noon. It is open to the public, entertaining for the entire family and free of charge.
"Late Summer Corn Madness" will feature fun demonstrations and activities that explain how Nathan Boone and his family encountered corn in every aspect of their lives. Corn was one of southwest Missouri's biggest cash crops, but it was also invaluable back at home. Both people and animals depended on corn for food. Husks, cobs and other parts of the plant were used in a number of different ways. Work and even play revolved around corn.
During "Late Summer Corn Madness," visitors will be able to grind and sift corn meal, see tools used to harvest corn and make their own corn husk doll. The program will also feature a husking bee for the kids. Many other activities are planned.
Nathan Boone Homestead State Historic Site preserves the last home and grave of Missouri frontiersman Nathan Boone. Boone's farm grew to over 1,000 acres, part of which is now the historic site.
